Tonya Blum Lincoln MA, MT-BC
Owner and Music Therapist
Tonya Blum Lincoln, MA, MT-BC, is the owner of Coyote Music Studio and has been a Board-Certified Music therapist since 2006. She's worked with many different types of clients on their personal goals through music therapy in a variety of places, including mental health clinics for adults and teens, physical rehab clinics, schools, senior care facilities, rec centers, and private homes.
Coyote Music Studio was formed in 2017 as a way for me to blend my two professions - music therapy and music education - by offering general music classes with music therapy goals in age-appropriate developmental skills that are inclusive to all children of different abilities, needs, and levels of musical ability. It has since grown into me providing music therapy services for all ages through everything I do - classes, workshop, and private lessons.
I grew up as an “Air Force Brat,” moving whenever my mother received new orders to places all over the United States and even to Turkey for 3 years. Music was always my refuge through the different schools. I started learning piano from my mom when I was 5 and flute at 11 when I entered middle school. I learned guitar, ukulele, and other instruments while studying music therapy. In May 2000, I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Music, with an emphasis in Flute, from Henderson State University in Arkansas and in May 2006, received my Master of Arts in Music Therapy from Texas Woman’s University, in Denton. Upon completion of my internship at the Denton State Supported Living Center and passing the certification test to receive my MT-BC credentials, I provided contract music therapy services for 8 years in mental health clinics, schools, senior care facilities, and private homes. I greatly enjoyed this work but found that driving to fulfill contracts all over north Texas was exhausting. I also noticed, while visiting schools to provide music therapy services, that there were more things I needed to know and the only way to learn them was to become a teacher. I spent a summer in the Region XI classes and received my certification to teach EC-12 Music. I enjoyed teaching for 4 years in a K-6 charter school, honing my skills in the music classroom and receiving training in Orff and Kodaly Level 1 but when I was given the opportunity to open my own studio, I jumped at it. It was a chance to blend music therapy and music education in a way that fit better with my philosophies on therapy and education.
I enjoy performing and highly encourage my students to perform as much as possible. You never really know yourself as a musician until you have to recover from a mistake in front of a live audience. I mean...that was part of the performance! I performed regularly during my years studying flute at Henderson and music therapy at TWU. I've also performed solo in various venues throughout DFW and as the singer and songwriter for various bands.

Why Coyotes?
The name Coyote Music Studio came from several sources. Coyotes are common to our area and I often see them roaming near our house in the early morning hours before the sun comes up. While this would bother most people, I find coyotes to be a fascinating animal and our dogs, Izzy and Astro, are also part coyote.
Coyotes have a bad reputation but it's mostly just bad press. They're a uniquely North American animal that have a knack for adapting well to any area - they've been found in both rural and urban settings. In fact, most US cities have a small population of coyotes now and you may never know they're there. They're a resilient animal that can adapt to new situations unlike many other animals, except maybe humans and birds. Resiliency and adaptation are important to both my music therapy clients and my music students.

Izzy and Astro are ranch dogs and not in the studio most days.
